How much does Odoo cost for a Quebec SMB?
“How much does Odoo cost?” It's the first question we get, and the honest answer is: it depends on three things, only one of which comes from Odoo. Here are the details, with no grey areas.
The three cost items of an Odoo project
An Odoo budget always breaks down the same way: licences (what you pay Odoo), hosting (the server your system lives on), and implementation (the work of configuration, data migration and training). The third item is almost always the biggest, and it is the only one that truly varies from one business to the next.
Many comparisons online only talk about the first one. That explains the gap between the advertised price and the real invoice of a project.
The cost of licences
Odoo comes in two editions. The Community edition is free, with no limit on users or time. The Enterprise edition is paid per user per month, at a rate that varies with the plan and the number of apps.
For a Quebec SMB of 3 to 10 people, the question deserves serious thought: a good part of what Enterprise sells is only useful beyond a certain size. We have devoted a whole page to this comparison.
The cost of hosting
Three options, three pricing logics:
- 🔹 Odoo Online — hosted by Odoo, simple, but little room to customize and your data leaves the country.
- 🔹 Odoo.sh — Odoo’s platform for custom projects. Powerful, billed by resource, and your bill climbs with your usage.
- 🔹 Managed server — a dedicated VPS at a Canadian host, fully administered. That’s our approach: a fixed, predictable monthly cost, data in Canada.
With us, a managed server starts at $20 per month for a business with 1 to 2 users, local and off-site backups included. Full prices are published in advance.
The cost of implementation
This is the item that really makes the bill vary. What influences it:
- the number of modules to configure — selling and invoicing is one thing; adding inventory, projects and payroll is another;
- the state of your current data — a clean customer file imports in an hour, a history scattered across three programs needs sorting;
- the number of people to train, and how comfortable they are with computers;
- the degree of customization — your document templates, your automations, your reports.
Our installation packages range from $600 to $1,000 depending on the level of support and hours of training. A project outside this scope is priced separately, and you know why.
The costs nobody mentions
A few items that often show up after the fact elsewhere, and that we prefer to name up front:
- Your team’s time. An implementation requires decisions and approvals. It’s not an invoice, but it is a real cost.
- Migrating history. Bringing over three years of invoices doesn’t cost the same as starting from your current customer list.
- Additional modules. Advanced accounting, HR, subscriptions: $100 per module with us, installed and tested.
- Major upgrades. Odoo releases one version a year. Staying current takes a bit of work, especially if you have custom development.
An example budget over three years
Take a five-person service business, on Community, on a managed server, with installation and 2 hours of training:
- Year 1: installation $800 + hosting 12 × $20 = $1,040
- Year 2: hosting only = $240
- Year 3: hosting + one added module = $340
That’s about $1,620 over three years, all included. Compare that with the combined cost of several separate software subscriptions — accounting, invoicing, CRM, project management — which often exceeds this amount in the first year alone.
This example is not a quote: it’s a ballpark figure to help you place your budget.
How to lower the bill without hurting yourself
Three levers that work, and one that doesn’t.
- Start small. Two or three well-configured modules are better than eight half-used ones. You add more later, at the business’s real pace.
- Clean up your data first. An hour spent correcting your customer list saves you three at import time.
- Choose Community if it’s enough. For many SMBs, it is.
What doesn’t work: skipping training. It’s the saving that costs the most, because a system nobody masters ends up being worked around.
